The Learning Repository
The Learning Repository
As I made a promise will share with you the resources which can help you get started in the field of Data Science. Let us first clear the air about few things. Please do not rush behind roles only like "Data Scientist". The Role is a misnomer. Please understand the job description to move forward.
Everyone has their own strengths and weakness. A clever person banks on their strengths and works on improving their weaknesses. So it will be a very different and varied discussion for that. Please go through this article from 'hackerearth' which describes things in detail :

Once we understand our position or what our goals should be we are ready to embark on our journey to study in the field of Data Science. Another main point is to persevere, because the road is not that smooth,
Let us start with the Open and Free Resources :
1. Coursera - One of the best, huge number of courses where I guess you will like a course surely.
(Pssst : The trick is to audit the course and you are golden)
2. edX - Another nice online course repository. Good collection and most are free if certification is kept aside.
3. DataCamp - Another player in this area.
All above are good ones with beautiful classified classes and differentiated so that a new learner will be able to understand and start learning.
Now let me come to the Free Resources ! I know this is an interesting part but please remember the above courses are also free just without certification.
1. Youtube - Yes, that youtube. Many platforms are posting good videos on YouTube to showcase their flair. It is a good learning opportunity. There are a few I follow myself. Like :
3Blue1Brown for Statistics Nuggets, Sentdex for Data Science topics, Krish Naik is a relatively new person but he beautifully describes the topics and Telusko for Python.
All these are just to name a few. You can find some other Gold Mine information also.
Please share the same with me too in the comments section below.
2. Analytics Vidhya - A beautiful Blog which has a lot of wonderful information regarding Data Science. A treat to go through as I doubt any information is not available here.
They have recently started providing courses, you can check them out too.
3. KDNuggets - Another wonderful online resource with a ton of information which can enrich your brain through and through. Subscribe to their newsletter and they will send wonderful piece of AI and Machine Learning related info right into your mail. The Cool thing about them is they have information segregated into understandable categories which I prefer while hunting for relevant information.
4. Medium - My all time favorite platform. This platform is a wonderful place to find relevant exercises and How-To' s. I have learnt a lot and even am learning something new everyday. There is just one catch. Everything good is not free, always. You can upgrade and get the Premium version or you can choose 5 articles each day to consume.
I am on Medium too, follow me if you like - Sohomjit
5. Udemy - One of my favorite platforms to learn. There are few courses which are given for free while some courses are a bit expensive. The trick is to wait for the correct time to snag the courses at their lowest prices. Normally during the sales. There is everything here for everyone. You just need the right time and patience to get the course. Keep monitoring the site and maybe you will get your wish (Pssst : Add your favorite course to your wish-list, the Santa Claus of Udemy might give you a waiver for the course in your mail next time).
Pro Tip : Do not go for ratings only, check the content and the Creator too.

6. LinkedIn - Yes that's right, LinkedIn have started this wonderful space for us. It is so nice that once you complete a course the certification will be just on your profile. So convenient ! Of course you want a nice Job and the best place for a recruiter to find you is LinkedIn profile. They have a lot of different topics to cover. There are a mix of free and purchasable content. You will get what you wish here.
Ufff ! A lot said and done, I will tell you my story.
As per the post before I told you I am a bit lazy (^o^).
That was not the only reason I could not finish my free courses. I was really struggling to manage time between my Job, Family and my Learning. Slowly I understood the Global trend :

Data is the new OIL !
If I did not change with Time I will be left behind for sure.
If I did not change with Time I will be left behind for sure.
I had to change or stay behind others. Believe me I know what it is like to learn in this age, to my experienced readers. Been there Done that ! But change is evident and why don't we do it together.
So I enrolled in an online learning platform for Data Science to get things started for me. The platform I chose was INSAID. They had good instructors and I liked the course content. It was well rounded off. I wanted to cover as much as I could. They have may course options for your liking. I am not advertising them but I liked their teaching standards and the Live classes.
But only learning will not get you anywhere that's for sure. Wherever you learn from you need to apply the same. Without applying you won't understand the effectiveness of the weapons in your arsenal. You will be like drinking water out of your hands even when you have a water bottle in your bag.
The most important way I learnt was while doing our Capstone Project in a group. The group consisted of lot of very high ranking people from different industries. Felt intimated at first but slowly opened up and it was AMAZING ! Got to learn a lot and implement what I learnt for so long.
Another problem one will face while moving into this field is to get good Data Sets for implementing their tools. Like a dummy for testing their weapons. There are two places I can refer :
1. UCI - Amazing place to get good data sets for various activities.
2. Kaggle - The Best of the Lot !
Wonderful site to help budding Data Scientists like me and you. So many resources and Data Sets to work upon. So many people have ongoing work here from where you can get inspiration and understand how a tool works on the data set. Also so many competitions are going on where one can participate to sharpen their tool arsenal or to get noticed by some wonderful company and get hired. Has happened to many, why not to you ?

There are also beautiful small courses here to get you started. The most important thing is they are providing Jupyter like notebooks (An IDE for Data Science) to you to code directly in the platform itself ! I think it is fabulous and super helpful for beginners.
So now you are ready to take on the World with your Data Science skills ! So why wait ? Crack on !
If you like the post please like and tell me if anything I missed or it is fine. Please comment !
The next post we shall move on to serious Data understanding.
Till then Keep Smiling !
